Shoot Lots of Photos!

Telling the Story

In the Photobird Learning Center, Michael Reichmann’s article “Telling the Story” describes one of the most important fundamentals of photography: shoot a lot of photos! No photographer is a one-shot wonder; they all take dozens or hundreds or thousands of photos each session to ensure they get at least one good photo. As the article explains, you should do the same.

Fortunately, with inexpensive memory cards, it’s easier than ever for you to take thousands of photos. Unfortunately, with the ease of manipulating images on computers, I think many people, especially those you may meet online, skip photography basics or forget what they’ve learned, and jump straight to their computer to edit their images.

My approach is to ensure that the shots I take are great to begin with, because I will rarely have the interest, the patience, or the time, to spend editing the photos on my computer. The benefit, therefore, is that I will strive for more creativity and better photos during the shooting process, instead of thinking “Oh, I’ll just edit it and make it look better when I get back to my computer.” It’s often very difficult to make a bad photo better by editing it on your computer. You must have great photos to begin with.

And to get great photos, you must take a lot of photos. Any professional photographer will tell you that.
